DIEsel

OUTFRAME BEST IN SHOW 2019

Artist Statement

The year is 2085. All hope in humanity has been lost. Only a few outposts remain, holding the last vestiges of life. Amidst the abandoned neon and decaying technology, remnants of a past existence lie scattered. Monuments to mass consumption and corruption, these structures stand as silent witnesses, statues to a society that once was but will never be again.

“[The] image is clever, haunting, elegant, and poetic. Fossil fuels are finite and the earth and its species are fragile, so the word DIE could have multiple meanings. The image is seductive, but the soft haze in the
image can be seen as dreamy or nightmarish. The colors are exhilarating,
but unnatural, the aesthetics and statement of this image are
rendered superbly,” – Shepard Fairey

HACKERS

A Tribute To My Favorite Movie

If it weren’t for the movie “Hackers” (1995), I probably wouldn’t be a designer. I saw “Hackers” for the first time when I was about 11 years old. I remember seeing the cover in our local video rental store and knew I had to rent it. The movie blew my adolescent mind—it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. It was the first time being a nerd felt cool; I wasn’t just a nerd anymore, I was a “Hacker,” a rebel. The soundtrack, the visuals, the characters—it ignited something in me. I think I tore open my family’s computer that night, trying to figure out how everything worked and if I could connect it to the internet.

From that moment, my fascination with technology opened many doors, but I always gravitated towards being creative. My friends and I managed to snag a pirated copy of Photoshop 5/6 in 8th grade (sorry, Adobe), and thus began my dive into design. Since then, I’ve had some great opportunities, made a ton of designs, and worked with amazing people. And I have “Hackers” to thank for a part of that.
